William Benjamin Day, M.D. ( 1817-1886) was one of four brothers who trained with their uncle to be doctors. Two brothers practiced in Maryland and two in Virginia. Dr. William B. Day married Emily Permelia Walters. He practiced medicine and lived in Dranesville. He had a farm in Vienna. Their son, William B., one of ten children, lived on the farm and the cemetery was located on part of the property. In the 1860 agricultural census, the father, William B. Day, owned three horses, four milk cows, six cattle, six hogs, and produced 1000 bushels of Indian corn. He also owned 8 slaves. During the Civil War, he was a surgeon on Col. Stone’s staff of the 16th Va.
Dr. Day was accused of murdering two Union pickets and imprisoned for seven months. He denied the charges. He was exchanged in July 1862. Later, he served as a Contract Surgeon with Cobb’s Georgia Legion, which fought with the Army of Northern Virginia. He was captured and spent another 6 months in Old Capitol Prison. He resigned in January 1, 1864 to return home to help support his eight children, where he continued to practice medicine. The cemetery is watched over by neighbors and descendants who provide some maintenance. (FCCPA Survey October 2009)
