Sixteen year old James N. Gunnell enlisted on October 1, 1863 in Fauquier County. Company C was organized on December 7, 1863 in Rectortown, Virginia, a unit of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry – John C. Mosby’s Partisan Rangers. Mosby divided the Partisan Rangers into small groups to approach Federal troops undetected and execute small raids.

Gunnell was captured on June 3, 1864 and eventually transferred to Fort Warren, Massachusetts on September 20, 1864. He took the Oath of Allegiance or Loyalty Oath on June 12, 1865, and subsequently returned to Fairfax County.

James Gunnell married Margaret Thompson of Washington, DC in 1884. There were no children. Margaret died on June 8, 1901 at the age of 60. James Gunnell died on June 9, 1921 at the age of 74.
